July 2016 On the Farm

July 1 - What are the ladies all excited about? Their new feed of course!
(It's always about food with them haha)

This is what the ladies were waiting for in the previous photo - the pellets that they will get in the robot while being milked.
We've been top-dressing their current TMR (total mixed ration) with the pellets so the cows learn how yummy they are.

Happy 149th Canada Day (July 1) to our Northern neighbors!

July 5 - Baling 2nd-cut hay today.
No wind, no clouds...feels a lot hotter than it says!

July 7 - Hoping the storms come our way some...we need the rain.

July 8 - Entering cows into Lely's T4C & listening to iHeart Radio while the final bits of construction go on around me.
The Milk Inspector gave us our final to-do list - we'll be starting those babies up Monday morning!

July 10 - As we discuss the plans for Start-up with the robots tomorrow, my thoughts go to my grandparents, Henry & Clara (pictured here at their 50th).
How they would have loved to see this.
Dad said his father would be ecstatic.
It's going to be difficult to watch the last cows go through the parlor that my daddy & his daddy built...but Grampa would have been so proud to see how his family's farm is moving forward with technology.

July 13 - No turning back now...
Monday morning we started up the robots & began demolition on our parlor that my daddy & his daddy built in 1968.

July 16 - Day 6 of Start-up & beginning of the 13th milking on robots!
Hubby & I are in charge today.
The cows are going in on their own mostly; we just have to make sure everything is moving along without any problems.

July 16 - I finally have some downtime, while supervising milking, to share some updates with you. :-D

.
Our ladies are taking to the robots awesomely! 😄  🐄 Thank-you for all the prayers!!!
.
A few girls have been real pains, but almost all have been their curious selves, once they realized what this new setup was.

July 18 - My best friend is 30 today!
Together for 4 years, married for 2 - this man is more than I could have ever asked for in a husband.
He makes me laugh, works hard, & stands beside me no matter what.
I'm proud to be his wife.

Just as no two cows have the same markings, they all have different positions that are comfy while resting.

July 21 - The gates are open & the ladies are going to the robots all on their own! 😄

Please pray that the majority of them will go so we don't have many to fetch. Thank-you.

I'm so proud of my girls!

The Fetch Pen - when we have new mommas or a cow that won't go through on her own, this gives us a smaller area to contain them behind the robot.

July 23 - Cows 149 & 2 are wondering why I'm sitting in a stall...
I'm sitting here because I need to make sure everyone that has been away too long gets milked - when it's hot & they're tired, cows will opt to sleep instead of getting up to be milked.

The struggle is real y'all - when you're so tired you want to drop in bed but are so covered in manure you have to find the energy to shower first...

July 25 - After the huge storm rolled through Saturday afternoon, my brother went out to check fence-line. While in the pasture, he found a spunky little heifer that had been abandoned.

Brother & Dad held her on the 4-wheeler & brought her up to the warm dry barn where she was given a yummy bottle of milk from another momma. 😊🐄

Welcome to the world, Stormy! 😄
